Director

At Medha, product engineering (packaging of the product) is an important activity during the design cycle. Medha's engineering skills have continuously improved over the number of products it has designed and the number of years of experience it gained. The environment in which the product is required to function is most important for engineering.

Level of shock and vibration, weather conditions like temperature range, humidity, salt mist, oil fumes, water splashing/immersion, etc. encountered by the equipment are important inputs for engineering.

All of Medha's equipment enclosures are designed to meet EMI/EMC requirements of the product. It has designed products like Micro Controller Based Governor for Diesel Electric Locomotives, where the Actuator part, containing precision mechanism and some electronics, is installed directly on the engine. This part is designed to withstand continuous vibration, high temperatures, oil fumes, etc. Medha has designed products like 25KVA under-slung Inverter for Air Conditioned Coaches, which is installed below the coach body. This equipment is sealed to withstand water immersion, but at the same time thermal conduction of the heat generated in the equipment to outside atmosphere is important. As normal heat sinks can get filled with mud and become poor thermal conductors, special heat sinks were designed. The equipment is also designed to withstand stone hits, shock and vibration, expected to encounter in the service.

Medha was the first company to introduce microprocessor based Speed Time Distance Recorders in India. Subsequently, we have designed and produced many products for Indian Railways including sophisticated products like Electronic Governors and Microprocessor Based Locomotive Control Systems for Diesel Electric Locomotives, in competition with world leaders in the field. At present, we have taken initiative to develop in-house Audio Frequency Track Circuits and Solid-State Interlocking Systems for Railway signaling applications, which involve real safety.

The company has grown with a philosophy of delivering the highest quality product, excellent service and customer training, to achieve customer satisfaction.

In the past 15 years of our association with Indian Railways in designing and developing various products for application on the locomotives and coaches, we have established our strength in designing and integrating micro processor-based real time control equipment with IGBT-based power controls as well as mechanical equipment and in our engineering skills in packaging the product. Having all the pre-requisites to meet products and services of world-class standards, it's right time to make global presence. To accomplish this, our immediate goal is to associate with world's largest locomotive and coach manufacturers and present our products to all the international Railways.

The motto of MEDHA-- 'Translating technology into innovative solutions' -- was demonstrated when it became the first company to successfully develop and install a micro controller based system on the Locomotives of Indian Railways way back in 1989. Over the years Medha's Design Centre has developed expertise in product development of Real time embedded control systems using micro controllers. Today Medha's designs are built around the latest high speed micro controllers, digital PID Controls, high capacity non volatile memories (Flash), Hall Effect Sensors, USB communications, Opto-electronic devices, contact less power and data transfers, solid state switching devices etc. involving leaded and surface mount devices. Medha believes 'quality is not produced but designed' to ensure reliable operation in harsh environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, vibration, including EMI/EMC.

In all the activities from product concept to product launch, the company uses various tools like MS Project for Project Planning, CADSTAR for PCB layouts, AUTOCAD and INVENTOR for mechanical designs, various compilers and software development tools for software design and verification, custom built simulators for product evaluation and testing etc. Each product design is reviewed at all stages from conceptual design, prototype, design verification and validation including field trials. "Continuous improvements" is a regular exercise at Medha to remain in forefront of technological advancements.

Today Medha can take up any product development not just for Real time embedded control systems but also products involving high power control applications and precision mechanisms. Medha competes with several multinational companies, and outruns

Power electronics needs expertise in both electrical and electronics engineering fields. As of now most of the requirements of Hi-tech Power Electronics systems for Scientific/ Industrial/ Railway and defence needs in India are being met with imports from developed countries.
Having understood the future potential for the Power electronics engineering, Medha has developed fundamental research base a decade ago.
The main emphasis was to develop basic technologies and manpower to meet the demands in the field of Power Electronics.

This led Medha to master the frontline technologies in Power Electronics. With the R&D base, it could successfully develop critical high power systems up to 200KVA for Indian Railways, Special purpose power systems for scientific and technological establishments, defence and industrial sectors.

All these efforts have made Medha's research establishment, to master the high power conversion technology based on IGBT resonant ZVT, ZCT transition converters, high power choppers and multi level high power AC Drives.

Now Medha can design and develop power converters for various applications such as Railway power converters, Lasers, Plasma Systems, Induction Heating power converters, Radio Frequency systems, High Voltage TWT Power supplies, etc.

Medha has successfully designed and developed the systems to meet the following requirements.

  • 180KVA Auxiliary converter for electric locomotive.
  • 25KVA under-slung Inverter for Air-conditioned Railway coaches.
  • Integrated Power supply for railway signaling and interlocking.
  • Resonant Inverters for Induction heating/plasma generation
  • Plasma power supplies.
  • Laser Power supplies.

Software Development Process Management at Medha

Medha has established a design and development process for its end-to-end products development in embedded technology for Locomotive Electronics, Railway signaling and Automobiles.

Medha has an established approach for improving the process of the company based on experience gained from successful and failed products.

Medha is certified ISO 9001 and Q9001-2000, and the process framework has paved the way for improving its process. Opportunities for process improvement are systematically identified at project and organisation levels.

At Medha in many aspects of project and organisation, learning has been enhanced and accelerated by systematically recording the history, deriving lessons from it and making the lessons available to others. Process improvements have been triggered by tool changes, introduction of new methods, data analyses, feedback, and user request for changes at the project level and organisational level.

To surge ahead with process improvement activities, Medha is adopting the SEI's CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integrated) framework and transit from ISO to CMMI level 5. The approach is to fully accept the CMMI framework, set target in terms of maturity and strategise and plan the improvement activities.

To begin with, Medha strengthened its metrics process, risk management to foresee the occurrence of problems and unforeseen events, Engineering process with efficient requirement development, proper technical solution with thorough verification and validation activity.
